Grayslake Antique Market presents an “Accent on Phonographs”
Date: September 9-10, 2017
All APS Society members are invited to attend the 2017 Grayslake, IL Antique Market with an “Accent on Phonographs”.
Records, phonographs, Nippers, books and more will be on display and for sale by members of the Wisconsin Illinois Musical Antique Phonograph Society.
The guest speaker on September 9th, at 1:00 will be John Hauger.
John will give a presentation on what was to be the biggest world’s fair of all time, celebrating the Louisiana Purchase from France by the U.S. in 1803. It would forever establish St. Louis for pulling together this world-class event. Fair attendance topped 19.7 million people. More than 60 countries brought their culture, foods, art, music, dance and wares to the lavish display of buildings and midway on 1,200 acres with over 1,500 buildings, some covering many acres each, housing leading edge processes and displays of 1904.
The fair brought together Transportation, Manufacturing, Mining, Agriculture, Horticulture, Electricity, Art, and Entertainment. The Columbia Phonograph Company had one of the more successful and entertaining phonograph marketing gimmicks at the World’s Fair. It was a Napkin Ring Cylinder that fair goers could record a message and send it home for friends and family to play on their Columbia Graphophone.
You too can experience this amazing 1904 technology as Tim Fizer of the Hoosier Antique Phonograph Society will show how he recreates and records on the “napkin ring” cylinders that helped promote the phonograph at the 1904 St. Louis Exposition and the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition. Attendees at the Grayslake Antique Market will have the opportunity to record their own Napkin Ring Cylinder. Tim uses these new napkin rings to educate school groups about the phonograph and to attract the next generation of collectors. It worked in 1904, and attendees will see how it works today! Join us on Saturday, September 9th, 1:00 p.m. at the Zurko Grayslake Antique Market at Lake County Fairgrounds.
